Co-directed films

I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the finest directors of arthouse animation in Finland, the members of Turun Anikistit collective. I’m a member myself and have served as chairman and secretary of the group. Together we have written, directed and animated a handful of awarded animated shorts.

English Lessons

I produced the film English Lessons, which is an animated satire based on the 1970’s edition of Linguaphone’s English language course. In eight lessons one can study outdated social values, colonial and class related oppression and the challenges in education. Each lesson is directed by a member of Turun Anikistit and mine is Lesson Seven: Another Round.

The other directors are Tommi Juutilainen, Lauri Järvenpää, Samppa Kukkonen, Reetta Neittaanmäki, Lotta Rapeli, Niina Suominen and Sara Wahl.

100 vuotta suomalainen animaatio vau!

( 100 Years of Finnish Animation Wow! )

Duration: 2 min l Year: 2014 l Production collectives: Turun Anikistit & Paperihattu

In 2014 we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Finnish animation by making a short mixed media tribute. It features the animation talent of the collectives called Turun Anikistit and Paperihattu as well as the voices of our former Estonian teachers at the awarded animation department of Turku Arts Academy. This short was co-directed by me and the multi-awarded animation director Elli Vuorinen. Fans of Finnish animation and popular culture can recognise a lot of familiar characters in this one.

Wurmloch

Duration: 13 min l Year: 2016 l Production company: Twisted Films & Turun Anikistit

Synopsis

This metaphysical triangular drama is set in early 20th century Vienna, where Otto, a war veteran, finds wormholes to another dimension. His sanity and relationship to his fiancee Emma is at stake. They both end up seeking help on Dr. Freud’s couch.

Wurmloch, or Wormhole in English, is an animated short film made by Turun Anikistit. I was one of eight writer/directors in this Freudian triangular drama. The film was a narrative and radical social experiment, which translated into a fruitful psychological thriller. None of us would have made a film like this on our own.

The other directors are Tommi Juutilainen, Lauri Järvenpää, Samppa Kukkonen, Antti Laakso, Joni Männistö, Lotta Rapeli and Elli Vuorinen. Art director: Simo Ruotsalainen.

Award:
Special Prize, Tampere Film Festival 2016
Special Mention, Interfilm, Germany 2016
Special Award, Anilogue, Hungary 2016
